The impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on staffing levels and workforce levels left many facilities without options for long-term continuity of operations and with increased burnout amongst remaining staff. It also highlighted the importance of creative and innovative succession and surge staffing strategies. Join us for a workshop that will focus on discussing the impacts of long-term emergencies on workforce management, as well as reviewing continuity and succession planning strategies used by other facilities nationwide. Participants will leave the workshop better equipped to update their own plans ahead of the next emergency and ahead of the next survey/audit for regulatory or accrediting organizations (e.g., CMS), who will expect facilities to be prepared with new ideas to meet the needs of the new normal in healthcare.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
  • Recall the critical elements of a robust continuity of operations plan and program for health centers
  • Define succession planning and its role in bolstering workforce development during an emergency, particularly within the health center environment
  • Identify the components of the CMS Emergency Preparedness Rule and other regulatory requirements which correspond with proper continuity and succession planning concepts
  • Describe the unique challenges for succession and workforce planning posed by long-term incident responses, such as COVID-19
  • Cite alternative succession planning strategies used by a variety of other healthcare organizations, big and small, nationwide, during the COVID-19 pandemic
  • Update their facility-specific COOP plans by incorporating new strategies and tactics identified during workshop discussions
  • Mitigate future staffing impacts by proactively implementing surge tactics and succession planning activities at their facilities
